As a mother of three boys I’ve had the pleasure of riding on a few trains. Miniature trains, narrow gauge trains, diesel trains, steam trains, local trains, Fall Foliage trains, Civil War trains Pumpkin trains, and international trains to name a few. Why not add a good old fashion tram to that list.
The historic MA and PA (short for Maryland/Pennsylvania) railroad in south central Pennsylvania, just outside of York, is one of our favorite weekend excursions. Run by a group of volunteers through grants and good old fashion hard work, it is a delightful day with the children. They are open every Sunday during the summer for tram rides, crafts and exhibits inside the General Store and Mill. (We visited in Heritage Days in September all activities including the open air tram ride were FREE. Tram ride usually $7 adult, $5 child, under 3 free).
Many weekends are themed. You can enjoy everything from World War I and II Encampments, Civil War themed days, Early Auto days, Heritage Days, as well as Fall Foliage and Christmas City Express tram rides. Christmas City Express tram, complete with blankets, and hot chocolate require advance paid tickets (can’t wait to try this out this Christmas!)
The general store is a charming step back in time. You can see everything from canned goods to an antique coffe grinder the size of a small child.
The second floor of the general store is full of exhibits on the rail lines history as well as multiple model trains including a lego train and wooden train the kids can play with! Yasssss!
A stop under the refreshment tent for chicken corn soup, hot dogs, two types of cake, AND some peach cobbler then a walk through the old mill rounded out our perfect day of history, riding the rails and hands on fun.
